Ladasten (Bromantane) was the subject of extensive research at the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences in Moscow in the late Eighties. This is where Bromantane was first developed. Thanks to its dopaminergic effects, it has often been implemented in the management of Parkinson’s disease. Even though it was first developed in the Soviet Union and continues to be used in Russia as a treatment for neurosthanesia, it has become popular among Americans and Canadians as a smart drug.
It’s been studied world wide and has been the subject of about 10 articles of human research in the past 10 years that can be found on PubMed

The pilot clinical trial of Ladasten was published 2006
Ladasten exhibits a unique combination of therapeutically significant stimulant and anxiolytic effects, which is unusual of psychostimulants. At the same time, the results of ladasten action upon single administration on the dynamics of psychopatological disorders and psychological self-test indexes show that the psychostimulant action is predominating.
The most significant trial was published in 2010; it was carried out in 28 different clinical centers and included data from over 700 Russians suffering from psychoautonomic syndrome and asthenic disorders.
We determined clinical efficacy of ladasten in regard to anxiety-depressive spectrum disorders, autonomic dystonia, sleep disorders. Ladasten therapy led to the significant increase of quality of life, which was seen not only after the end of therapy, but after the withdrawal of the drug…
In conclusion, the efficacy of ladasten was shown in its antiasthenic, anxyolytic, autonomic nervous system stabilizing properties, the normalization of sleep-awake cycle and the increase of quality of life.
The study notes an onset of beneficial effects on day three of dosing and that the helpful effects lingered for some time after going off the drug.
A 2012 Russian placebo controlled study established it as an effective treatment of neurasthenia, which is a generalized condition in which one suffers from fatigue, headache and general moodiness
“The self-assessment of the effect of single test doses of ladasten and placebo was independent of the individual differences of EEG alpha rhythm organization and personal traits with respect to tolerability, wish to continue the treatment, activating and calming effects. In long-term treatment, higher subjective estimations of the ladasten and placebo effect appeared in patients with reduced EEG alpha rhythm…”
Bromantane was used by seven Russian athletes, including two medalists, during 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, following which the compound was added to the banned list as a stimulant and a masking agent.A story in The Independent (back in 1996 when it was presumably more independent) described…
Bromantan, which combines the properties of steroid, stimulant and masking agent – effectively the Grand Slam in doping terms – was developed by the Russian national institutes for pharmacology, and has allegedly been used by the Russian army and by cosmonauts. It is also serving as “rocket fuel” for Russian and east European competitors at the Games.
If you are looking for a psycostimulant, have a look at Phenotropil (Phenylpiracetam).
